When there is a selection, clicking on a palette will apply that palette to the selected artwork; when there is no layer selected, clicking on a palette will create color swatch chips, which are rectangles for each color in the palette.

When you are happy with the colors in your current selection, save those colors as a reusable custom palette. You can do this by generating color swatch chips with no selection, or after refining colors in your artwork, select the rectangles or objects that contain the colors you like. This lets you build a personal library of favorite colors that you can quickly apply as swatch layers in future designs, which is helpful when you can:

• Reapply brand systems instantly

• Test multiple UI themes

• Maintain visual consistency across projects

• Iterate faster without rebuilding styles

I wanted to share a quick update and give you a proper sneak peek of Typogram Studio, our brand new design tool built specifically for creating beautiful, custom typography designs.

We’ve been deep in the work for the past few months, building this from the ground up. And now, it’s finally at a point where I’m excited (and honestly, a little nervous) to show you what we’ve been working on.

Below, I’m highlighting a few of my favorite parts of Typogram Studio — thoughtful, detail-driven features we’ve obsessed over that I think you’ll really enjoy.

Designing Inside Typogram Studio: Getting Started

Getting started designing inside Typogram Studio is pretty straightforward. Just create a blank artboard, add your text, and you’re ready to begin.

If you need inspirations, try our brand new generate artboard feature. It allows you to instantly browse design ideas based on techniques like ligatures, icon swaps, color and more and filter ideas using tags like “stylish”, “fun”, and more. It’s a great way to stumble upon something new and unexpected.

Polishing Your Typography: Ligatures, Style Alternates, & Variable Font Gradient

I’ve always believed it’s the small details that make a design feel complete, especially in typography. That idea shaped so much of what we built into Typogram Studio.

You can swap in alternate letterforms or ligatures with a click. If a font has style alternates, they’ll show up in the side panel, ready for you to explore and substitute into your design. The Letter Select tool lets you mix letters from different fonts — one of my favorite ways to add personality to a design.

For variable font lovers, the Variable Font Gradient tool lets you play with weight, slant, and width using an interactive graph. You can drag to create smooth transitions or use presets to get started quickly. If you want even more custom control, you can tweak individual letters using Letter Select for a completely custom look.

Discovering Fonts in Typogram Studio

Finding the right font should feel like play, not a chore. When designing the font menu in Typogram Studio, I wanted the experience to be fun and intuitive. You can filter fonts by traits like variable, ligature, serif, sans serif, display, or import a font you already love. Another way to explore is through our Artboard Generation feature, where you can filter designs by traits like “ligature”, design ideas like “colorful”, or by tone through tags like “stylish.”

We’re also lucky to continually work with The Type Founders, who help us bring a curated library of premium retail fonts (like Proxima Nova, Mastro, and more) into Typogram Studio — the same high-quality typefaces from top foundries (like Hamiliton Wood Type, P22 Type Foundry and more) you’ll find on Monotype and Adobe Fonts. We’re currently putting together a favorite font guide to help you explore everything inside.

Exporting or Copying to Other Tools

When we were building export options in Typogram Studio, I wanted to make sure it felt effortless — whether you're wrapping up a logo or sharing a quick concept. Just click export, choose SVG or PNG, select size, and toggle on a transparent background if you need it. We also added preset sizes for places like Instagram and Pinterest, so you can export straight from Typogram Studio. And if you’re someone who likes to fine-tune in other tools (like I do), you can copy your design directly into Figma, Canva, Adobe, or Affinity. It’s designed to slide right into workflows you already have.

In this post, you’ll learn three fundamental graphic design principles that are easy to apply and highly effective—even if you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your visual skills.

Use Color Psychology to Create Emotion

Color is one of the most powerful tools in graphic design. It sets the emotional tone before your audience reads a single word. That’s why color psychology is considered a foundational graphic design principle.

How to apply this principle:

1. Choose colors based on emotion

When you are collecting design inspirations for mood boarding or building a brand color palette, consider how each color choice connects to emotion. Using color as an emotional language in your design is key to creating meaningful visuals.

You can ask questions like:

• What mood should this design create?

• Does this mood fit with the overall energy you are trying to create with your design?

• Is it legible with the rest of the design?

2. Warm tones usually communicate high energy.

In general, warm tones like reds, oranges, and yellows create urgency and excitement. They work well in calls to action, announcements, and promotional graphics.

3. Cool tones usually communicate calm and trust.

Blues, greens, and purples bring a sense of professionalism and ease. These are ideal for tech, wellness, or corporate branding.

Design tip: Think of color as your emotional language. Use it with the same level of intention as your typography or layout choices.

How to approach font pairing:

1. Choose a strong font for headlines

Use a bold, eye-catching sans serif or display typeface to create visual impact at the top of your design.

2. Pair it with a clean serif for body text

A serif font adds structure and elegance while improving readability for longer text.

3. Focus on contrast with balance

Avoid using fonts that are too similar as much as you can, unless you have a good reason. Instead, mix styles that complement each other but offer enough contrast to make each element stand out.

Design tip: Good font pairing is like a visual dialogue—each typeface plays a role, but together they create a unified voice.

Use Contrast to Guide the Viewer’s Eye

Contrast is a simple yet powerful graphic design principle that brings clarity and direction to your design. It helps you create a visual hierarchy and improves how easily your message is understood.

How to use contrast effectively:

1. Identify visual monotony

If everything on your page is the same size, color, or weight, nothing grabs your audience’s attention—and your design will feel flat.

2. Create clear focal points

Contrast is about tension created by differences in shapes, colors, and textures. Think about where in your design you can create moments of tension. This could be: Add more contrast to font pairings, like using serifs with sans serifs. Make headings larger and bolder. Use color or spacing to separate sections. Highlight important elements with different type weights or background colors.

3. Build hierarchy through contrast

Visual hierarchy tells the viewer where to start and what to notice next. It’s key for creating intuitive, communicative designs.

Design tip: When in doubt, add more contrast. It improves readability, guides attention, and strengthens your layout.

Our updated color panel is now larger and more user-friendly, allowing for seamless selection from pre-existing swatches to custom colors. Additionally, you can now select lighter or darker shades of your chosen colors, enabling effortless exploration of different variations to match your design needs.

Within the newly redesigned color panel, we’re introducing the “palette” section, featuring curated color suggestions that make discovering harmonious combinations simpler and more inspiring. Whether you’re seeking bold contrasts or subtle harmony, these palettes provide color pairings tailored to your selection. This new feature is tremendously helpful when you’re stuck on pairing colors or need inspiration palette ideas as a place to start. This update introduces Variable Font Gradient and Glyphs Substitution—two tools that will expand your design possibilities. With these new features, you can explore dynamic typography options and refine your design ideas in innovative ways, giving you greater control and flexibility over your creative process.

№1 Variable Font Gradient: Our Favorite New Feature

One of our favorite logo design trends is when designers use multiple font weights to create a gradient with letterforms. With the recent introduction of variable fonts to Typogram, it was the perfect time to implement a font gradient feature. With variable fonts, you can smoothly transition between different weights and styles – far beyond the typical "regular" or "bold.”

To use Variable Font Gradient, just select your design in the logo editor, choose a variable font, turn on font gradient under “weight” on the right panel, and then play with the handles of the visualizer to start designing! If you prefer pre-set options,  you can choose from our gradient templates (small thumbnails below the visualizer) and tweak them to your liking.

Here are the detailed steps:

1. Select your design in the logo editor 

2. Filter by Variable Fonts: Go to “All Fonts” and turn on the “Variable” filter to explore fonts with this capability.

Once you’ve chosen your font, head to the “Weight” section. You'll see a curved graph visualizing how the font weight is distributed across your design.

1. Customize with handles: Easily manipulate the graph to create smooth weight transitions between letters.

2. Use Variable Font Gradient templates: Prefer pre-set options? Choose from our gradient templates to jump-start your creativity, then tweak them to your liking.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for fonts with a diamond icon! These exclusive premium fonts are available only on Typogram, licensed from top type foundries.

№2 Glyph Substitution for More Creative Control

We’ve also added live glyph substitution to certain fonts, giving you more design flexibility. Some fonts contain alternate versions of letters, numbers, or symbols to enhance creativity.

To use this feature:

• Select a letter, then look under “Substitution” on the right side panel to see if alternatives are available.

• Simply click the glyph you like, and it will apply to your design instantly.

That’s it! In just a few clicks, your logo becomes even more unique and distinctive.

Did you know there’s a single visual element that represents the entire Paris 2024 games? It’s not the purple stadium or the iconic medal - it’s something far more subtle and clever. I’ll give you a hint: it’s all about the curves!

The Duality of Design: A Demure Masterpiece

The core of the Paris Olympics branding is an iconic logo that's both a woman's face and the Olympic flame. Created by the talented team at Royalty Eco-Branding, this emblem is brilliantly subtle - or should we say, demure?

“Demure” has become a trendy word that everyone’s using on the internet lately; typically meaning modest or reserved. The design is demure in that it’s brilliant but understated, conveying its message without shouting.

Here’s what the creators say about it:

“The emblem carries several symbols: the face of a woman as an allegory of freedom, the Olympic flame as a symbol of progress for all, and the gold representing human excellence.”

The duality of the logo is clever - if you remove the lip, it looks more like the Olympic flame, but add it back, and it's unmistakably a French woman’s face. It’s a testament to the power of thoughtful design.

Curves: The Visual Thread

What truly sets the Paris 2024 branding apart is its clever use of curves. This design element ripples through every aspect of the visual identity, from the logo to the typography. The wordmark “PARIS 2024” eschews traditional straight lines, opting instead for subtle curves that echo the circular motif of the main emblem. Even the tiniest details, like the separation between the dot and stem of the ‘i,’ feature a curved gutter rather than a straight one.

Bezier Curves and Brand Identity

For all you fellow design nerds out there, I took a deep dive into the Bezier curves of this logo. Using the Bezier Curve editor in Typogram, I discovered some fascinating details about how the designers used extrema points to create a perfectly balanced icon.

A Stroke of Genius: The Zero Becomes an Icon

Perhaps the most ingenious aspect of the logo’s versatility is how it transforms for different formats. When a longer, rectangular shape is needed, the designers cleverly replace the “0” in “2024” with the main emblem. This solution not only maintains brand consistency but also allows the iconic face/flame symbol to be present even in space-constrained applications.

The Devil in the Details

While the overall concept and execution of the Paris 2024 logo are undoubtedly strong, a closer inspection reveals some imperfections in the Bezier curve construction for the wordmark. Unlike the main emblem, which adheres to proper “extrema” placement of anchor points, the curves in the wordmark appear somewhat random. This subtle flaw might go unnoticed by most, but it stands as a reminder that even in world-class design, there’s always room for improvement.

Beyond the Logo: Branding a Stadium

But the branding doesn’t stop at the logo. The Paris Olympics team had to think about how to brand an entire stadium! They came up with a brilliant solution: the brand color purple. From the track and field to the athletes’ towels, this distinctive hue creates a cohesive brand image across all aspects of the games.

The Olympic Brand Family

While the Paris 2024 logo captures our immediate attention, it’s worth noting that it sits under a larger umbrella - the overarching Olympic brand. Central to this brand is the iconic Olympic rings symbol, which has a fascinating history of its own.

The Olympic rings have undergone several iterations throughout their history. There have been a total of six versions of this symbol since its inception. The most recent significant change to the Olympic rings occurred relatively recently. The version used up until the 2008 Beijing Olympics featured a distinct design element: the rings had small gaps where they intersected, suggesting a spatial relationship between them.

Hello, Typography Enthusiasts! I hope this newsletter finds you well! How has your week been? As for me, I’ve been shifting my focus to YouTube content creation, which, I’ll be honest, has been quite a challenge! As someone who’s more comfortable behind a computer screen designing or coding, recording my voice and editing videos is definitely outside my comfort zone. I’m slowly overcoming these hurdles.

I’ve always believed that typography has a profound impact on our daily lives, often in ways we don’t even realize. This series is my attempt to bring those hidden influences to light and spark conversations about the power of letterforms. It’s been a journey of discovery for me, and I hope it will be for you too.

Our First Episode: Hacking AI for Typography — Creative Workarounds for AI’s Limitations

In our debut episode, we dive into the world of artificial intelligence and its impact on typography. As someone who uses AI for various tasks like coding and writing emails, I’ve noticed some extreme challenges when it comes to AI and typography — that it just doesn’t work!

When you ask AI to create an image with words, the text is often misspelled or the font looks wonky. It’s usually easier to start from scratch the old way without AI than to fix these AI-generated texts. To work around these limitations, I share three ways to incorporate AI in typography work:

First Idea: Swap Letter Parts with AI-Generated Icons

One way to incorporate AI in typography is to use font as a base but replace parts of letters with AI-generated icons to enhance meaning. For example, you could change the dot of the “i” in “Tinder” with a little fire icon. If you give AI a clear command, it can generate an icon specifically shaped to replace part of a letter, like a circular dragon icon to replace an “o”.

Second Idea: AI-Generated Background Images for Typography

Another approach is to use AI to generate images that complement your typography. Give AI instructions to create non-photo-realistic images in specific styles, like Art Deco or flat graphics. Make sure to specify that you don’t want any text included in the image. This way, you can create backgrounds or illustrations that work well with your typography without the AI attempting to generate text.

Third Idea: AI-Textured Letterforms

The third method involves morphing AI-generated images with letter forms. There’s no host-guest relationship here; instead, you give AI a letter shape as input and ask it to transform it, like making it look like a bubble or fire. The result is a new stylized letter that combines the generated image and the letter form, which you can then compose into your design.

I believe the root of the problem lies in how AI approaches typography. Currently, AI works with pixels directly instead of the raw materials of typography: fonts and text styles. AI companies should license fonts and incorporate typesetting principles into their algorithms. This would allow AI to choose appropriate fonts, apply text styles, and consider factors like tracking, kerning, size, color, and texture when generating typographic images.

Dear typography enthusiasts, I hope this newsletter finds you well! I have a confession to make - in my off time away from Typogram’s duties, I’ve become more and more embedded in the fandom of House of the Dragon! The latest episodes have been so captivating that I can’t help but let this hobby spill into my weekdays at work. As a result, I’ve started creating fan art in the form of typography. This week’s newsletter is a tutorial born from my off-duty passion, and I’m excited to show you how I create these snippets of typographic composition using Typogram.

This tutorial demonstrates the power and versatility of our web app, highlighting several key features that make Typogram stand out.

1. Glyph Substitution We utilized Typogram’s extensive glyph substitution options to give each letter in "House" and "Dragon" a unique and ornate appearance. This feature allows you to select from multiple variations of each letter, adding flair and personality to your text.

2. Ligatures Our composition takes advantage of ligatures, particularly the "RA" ligature in "Dragon". Ligatures combine two or more characters into a single glyph, creating a more cohesive and visually appealing text.

3. Swap Shape with Icon To add visual interest, we incorporated icons into the composition. We placed a castle icon in the counter of the "O" in "House" and a dragon icon in the "O" of "Dragon". This feature allows you to seamlessly integrate icons into your typography.

4. AI-generated Icons The castle and dragon icons used in this composition were generated by AI and then I simplified them for use. This showcases how Typogram embraces cutting-edge technology to enhance your design possibilities.
